The 600 mile wide plasma mass occurred several hundred miles above the North Pole, according to a study in the journal Nature Communications.
« Until now, it has been uncertain that space plasma hurricanes existed at all. So it’s unbelievable to prove this with such a striking observation, « said Mike Lockwood, space scientist at the University of Reading and co-author of the study, in a statement.
The spectacle was captured by satellites in August 2014, but only recently during research under the Lead discovered by scientists from Shandong University in China.
The space hurricane « rained » electrons instead of water, had multiple spiral arms, and lasted eight hours before gradually hissing, the researchers said.
« Tropical Storms are associated with enormous amounts of energy, and these space hurricanes have to transfer solar wind energy and charged particles into the upper atmosphere through unusually large and rapid transmission of solar wind energy and charged particles « said Lockwood.
The discovery of the » space hurricane « during a period of low geometric activity suggests it could be a common phenomenon, Lockwood said.
