Temple opened the year with a 72:60 win over NJIT, who took the lead 42:26 at halftime and drove to the finish line. In game two against Houston, however, the Owls suffered a blowout loss, as they fell back in a 76:50 loss with 32:22 during the break.
On December 30th in their last game, Temple lost another, this time 79-71 to SMU. At the head of the owls was Brendan Barry with 17 points, four rebounds and two assists. Damian Dunn added 15 points with four rebounds and one assist, and Jeremiah Williams added 13 points with two boards and two assists.
On the SMU side, they started their year with six straight wins but their last two Games lost. Victories were courtesy of Sam Houston, Texas A&M-CC, Houston Baptist, Dayton, East Carolina, and Temple. Since then there have been two losses for Houston and Cincinnati.
In the loss to the Bearcats between 76 and 69, Kendric Davis was the SMU’s top scorer, who doubled with 14 points, 14 assists and three rebounds. Emmanuel Bandoumel added 12 points with two boards and Darius McNeill put up 10 points with six boards in 31 minutes.
SMU is 4-0-1 ATS in their last five Monday games and 1-4 ATS in their last four home games a team with a lost road record. The end is 12-5 in the Mustangs’ last 17 home games and 7-0 in their last seven home games against a team with a lost road record.
Meanwhile, Temple has 3-7 ATS and in the last nine road games 2-7 ATS against a team with a home record. The under is 5-1 in their last six owls total and 12-4 in their last 16 street games.
PICK: I’ll be staying with Temple. This should be an interesting matchup, however. The Mustangs had a 51.7-36.8 percent lead over the field goals percentage at the last meeting of those teams on Dec. 30, but Temple was better at recovering 43-38. It was a competitive game, and it should be. I like it when the owls pull out a late cover in another fun game here.
