Supercars has confirmed that it is ready to race at Sandown for the Australian Grand Prix weekend in the event that the season opening Formula 1 event does not take place.

Serious doubts have arisen as to whether the AGP said in March, whereby the strict border controls in Australia are likely to represent an insurmountable roadblock in the short term.

A biosphere concept was worked on, in which Formula 1 teams and drivers would have operated in a strictly controlled bubble. However, it does not seem possible to avoid a two-week quarantine on entry into the country.

Should the anticipated postponement occur, not only does the Formula 1 schedule need to be reshuffled as Supercars is making its second round of the season 2021 in Albert Park.

However, there has been a backup for a long time, as Supercars is said to have booked Sandown for the slot from March 18 to 21 last year as part of its calendar planning for 2021.

Although Not officially confirmed at the time, Sandown was listed as a « flex option » as part of the Supercars calendar announcement.

A spokesman told Autosport last night that no statement would be made until official news about the fate of the AGP. However, the position of the category has since been updated to include confirmation that Sandown is locked and loaded if necessary.

« If changes prevent the AGP from continuing, we are ready to race at Sandown Raceway that same weekend drive, « says a brief statement from Supercars.

Sandown has not hosted any Supercars since November 2019. The circuit was missed last season due to the second wave of COVID-19 cases that locked Melbourne from July to October.

Supercars may also choose to wait for the new AGP date and their own schedule shuffle accordingly in order to keep his place on the coveted undercard of the event.

Of the remaining free dates in the Formula 1 schedule, only November 7th is a conflict with the Supercars schedule, as this is currently of The Auckland Round is busy.

September 19 is the mid-season, October 17 is a week after the Bathurst 1000 and November 21 is a week before the end of the Gold Coast 600 season.
