A Queensland police officer is in serious but stable condition in hospital this morning after allegedly being stabbed multiple times by a man he knows in a mall.
The 50-year-old police officer was patrolling the Near Cairns Central when he spotted the man in a stairwell yesterday afternoon.
He approached the 22-year-old man and there was a « row » in which the officer was stabbed multiple times, Superintendent Chris Hodgman said.
The officer sustained wounds to his stomach, chest and a lung puncture and was operated on at Cairns Base Hospital.
The allegedly affected 22-year-old was later found at another address about half an hour away in Bungalow, where he was was arrested.
Superintendent Hodgman stressed that the alleged sting was an accidental incident, but still a « very, very sad day ».
