PUNE: Former English skipper Michael Vaughan believes that playing cautious cricket for the first 40 overs could cost India the 2023 ODI World Cup.

In both ODIs against England, Team India had got off to a slow start, but exceeded the 300-run mark thanks to the late attacks by Krunal Pandya and Rishabh Pant in the first and second games respectively.

While the hosts in the first ODI had only scored 64 runs in the first 15 overs, they only scored nine in the first four overs in the second game.

Vaughan wants India to accelerate from the start as the team led by Virat Kohli has enough strength and depth in the batting squad to score on flat wickets of over 375.

« Today should be a lesson for India … If you play it safe with bat for 40 overs, you could have enough power & depth at a World Cup at home in two years to click on fla to achieve 375 points. England are leading the way with this approach, « Vaughan tweeted.

On the flip side, England had seen the openers kick off in both games. While the visitors collapsed in the first ODI, they made sure the same thing didn’t happen in the second .

In the second ODI, Ben Stokes scored a 6-wicket win against India with his lively 99 and the strong English opening player Jonny Bairstows 112-Ball 124.

The visitors pursued a mammoth goal of 337 and drove with 39 Balls home when she finished the series 1-1 with three games. If the Indian batsmen stole the show that afternoon, it was the English batters’ turn to put on a quality stick game under lights.

Bairstow, pointing all guns at the Indian bowlers, attributed the depth of strike to the visitors for playing fearless cricket.

« We have Adil Rashid arriving at 10 or 11 o’clock. Adil has 10 top notch hundreds. To have this type of player at 10 or 11 o’clock, not many teams around the world have that, « Bairstow said during the virtual press conference.

» If you think about the rulers in Moeen Ali, the Curran brothers, connect, the list can go on. So yes, that definitely gives you a lot of confidence knowing the lineup is strong, « he added.
