Melbourne: Indian tennis player Ankita Raina celebrated her first victory in the main draw of a WTA Tour event with three sets against Elisabetta Cocciaretto at the Phillip Island Trophy on Sunday.

Ankita came from behind and beat the Italian in the opening round of the USD 235,238 hard court tournament with 5: 7, 6: 1, 6: 2.

The win of two hours and eleven minutes brings Ankita from 181 to her new career high singles rank of 156. If it goes deep, it will secure its place in the top 150.

Ankita took part in the Yarra Valley Classic and Thailand Open on the WTA Tour, but lost in the first round.

The 28 -year-old Indian said the conditions were difficult but she finally found a way to win.

« It was very, very windy today. I started well, but she (Elisabetta) became more consistent. But in the I played the second and third sets solidly, « she said.
