Record producer Phil Spector, the man behind decades of pop hits and convicted murderers, died at the age of 81.
Spector died Saturday in a hospital of natural causes, according to the California Department of Corrections Rehabilitation. His official cause of death is being determined by a doctor.
He helped curate the mainstream playlist for decades, which featured more than 20 tracks that featured in the Billboard Top 40 between 1961 and 1966 – many with his signature Wall of Sound « . He worked with the Beatles, Tina Turner, Leonard Cohen, girl groups like the Ronettes and the Crystals, and others.
He effectively retired after releasing his last full record with the Ramones in 1979. In 2003, he killed actress and model Lana Clarkson, who was found dead in his mansion outside of Los Angeles after he shot her in the mouth. In 2009, he was sentenced to 19 years in prison for second degree murder.
Spector maintained his innocence, saying that Clarkson killed himself. In Esquire he was quoted as saying, « I didn’t do anything wrong … She kissed the gun. »

He was tried again in 2008. In 2009, six years after the murder, he was convicted and spent his final years in prison in Stockton, Calif.
In 2014, his attorney told the Daily Mirror that Spector was in poor health and had lost the ability to speak, and that he would have been suspended in 2024.

While Spector made his career writing love songs for teenagers, his personal love life has been volatile and abusive. He became very jealous and territorial of his partners. His marriage to Ronnie, who divorced in 1974, was one of intense scrutiny, verbal abuse, and alcoholism.
At worst, Spector was known for breakouts, screaming, and threatening violence against his colleagues and women. Obsessed with guns, he had reportedly occasionally drawn a gun against artists in the studio, including Leonard Cohen and the Ramones, as well as visitors to his home, strangers, girlfriends and women.

In her lengthy divorce proceedings, Ronnie said Spector had a “mean and ungovernable temperament” and was “extremely cruel” to her and caused « great and severe mental and physical suffering ».
Born Harvey Philip Spector on December 26, 1939, he lived with his family in the Bronx for the first few years of his life. Spector’s father killed himself when he was 9 years old. The epitaph on his father’s tombstone read: « To know him is to love him. » Ten years later, after Spector’s family moved to LA, he saved the phrase to name the first of many songs in his career, « To Know Him Is To Love Him, » the teddy bears he wrote. produced and carried out. George Harrison and John Lennon were both big fans of Spector’s Trial and continued to work on it him together. Every Beatle released at least one solo album in 1970, the year the band split, and Spector produced two of them: Harrison’s All Things Must Pass and Lennon’s Plastic Ono Band.
