The National Women’s Hockey League, founded in 2015, has a new team this season, The Toronto Six. And a player who happens to be from Ottawa is having a big premiere.
Lindsay Eastwood scored the first goal in franchise history for the Toronto Six women’s hockey team against the Minnesota Whitecaps on January 23rd.
Eastwood became Born and raised in Kanata. She’s been playing hockey since she was six, and that goal for the six is one of the biggest goals of her career.
“Found the back of the net. It’s a piece I don’t usually score, so that was pretty exciting, « says Eastwood.
Six teams make up the NWHL and Toronto is the first Canadian team. The women’s pro league is also the first to pay their players, but they still need full-time jobs to supplement what little they make from hockey.
« Honestly, I was the moment I scored scored, just thrilled that we finally had the lead in the game, « said Eastwood. « I didn’t even think it was the first franchise target until I was on social media after that. My phone exploded and everyone was freaking out for me. And then I realized how big the goal is for our franchise, for our team and for the league. «
All six teams are currently in a bubble in Lake Placid, New York, with strict rules due to COVID-19. After the game, calling was the only option.
« I called my parents as soon as I could and they were so excited for me, » says Eastwood.
« I just went crazy. We jumped off our seats, » says Dave. « That Girl was in front of the net and put it under the counter. It was actually a very nice target. «
Lindsay comes from a hockey family. Her uncle Mike Eastwood played in the NHL from 1992 to 2004.
» Yesterday I didn’t know it was so early and then I clicked it and within five minutes I got it she scored that goal. So the timing was … thank god, ”says Mike. “I’m so excited for her and proud of her. You know it was a goddamn shot too, like the one she buried it on the top shelf. That’s where a goalscorer’s goal is. «
Lindsay says her ultimate goal is to play in the Olympics, but this is still a wish come true.
» When I was a little girl and turned eight, I did Blown out the candles and wanted to play in the NHL one day, « says Lindsay, » and my little cousin asked me what I wanted and I said I’ll tell you when I’m 25. I’m 24 and I play in the NWHL. I think it’s pretty cool how it all worked out. It was quite a drive. “
