Nesthy Petecio knows how fear and worry can negatively affect their performance in the ring.

Petecio has already learned the hard way not to be surprised by her fears when she and Carlo Paalam join boxer colleagues Eumir Marcial and Irish Magno at the Summer Games in June.

Before Petecio booked her ticket to Tokyo, she lagged behind an Olympic place after a surprise quarter-final at the Olympic Boxing Qualifiers in Asia and Oceania in Jordan last year.

Petecio admitted almost a year ago that she was « afraid of failure » as she dealt with high expectations for the tournament after winning gold at the AIBA World Championships and the Southeast Asian Games.

« When I was in Jordan, my worries and nerves crept in, » Petecio told the Filipino show « Power and Play with Noli Eala ».

« Even when I hear bad things being said about myself or when I feel bad, I don’t allow those feelings to stay with me. I feel them, but I forget them so I can focus on my performance.  »

Petecio eventually nailed her Olympic berth due to her superior rank after the Olympic qualifying tournament was scrapped due to the coronavirus pandemic.

« The Olympic Games are the high point of our careers. For me, your career as an athlete is only finished when you play in the Olympics, « said Petecio.

« I still have a lot to improve, » said Petecio. « I want to focus on my endurance, my speed, my strength, my timing and everything. » – Rappler.com

Delfin Dioquino dreamed of being a PBA player but he didn’t have the skills to make it. So he pursued the next best thing to be an athlete – write about her.

He took up journalism at the University of Santo Tomas and joined Rappler as soon as he graduated in 2017.
