Paul Merson has compared West Ham loanee Jesse Lingard to former Liverpool striker Emile Heskey on the grounds that he is a team player.
After several loan games in the football league, Lingard became a first-team player for Man United in the 2015/16 season.
The midfielder has played more than 200 times for the Red Devils in more than five seasons. His youth club form earned him a regular place for England.
Lingard has been capped 24 times for England and was a key player in the 2018 World Cup, but he turned down the pecking order at Old Trafford earlier this season. </ Until January, he couldn't make a single Premier League appearance for United. This led to his loan move to West Ham during the winter window.
The Englishman has hit the bottom for the Hammers. He has five goals and two assists from his seven games. His fifth goal for the club was against Arsenal on Sunday.
Merson told Sky Sports, as quoted by The Metro, that Lingard is like Heskey because of his selfless teamwork:
« He’s running away from the ball, he’s ready to run and take players away. I’m a huge fan of him.
« He has to go on with this now. He’s a team player, he plays for the team, he’s not selfish. Sometimes playing for the team ruins your templates and your goals.
« He reminds me of a midfield heskey, he plays for the team, he doesn’t worry about himself, he worries about the team. «
» Sometimes when things don’t go well, everyone jumps up, « they haven’t hit that long or they haven’t settled down … »
« It may not be this pass that is the goal but he’ll be involved, so I think he’s a good player. «
Man United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recently praised Lingard for doing well for West Ham:
« It really worked for Jesse, for David [Moyes] and also for us as a club. We know that Jesse has a 10 and we have Bruno (Fernandes) there.
