DORTMUND: Borussia Mönchengladbach’s coach Marco Rose will meet his future club Borussia Dortmund in the quarter-finals of the German Cup on Tuesday, as the top German teams see a rare chance of silverware in the absence of FC Bayern Munich. </ As favorites in eight of the last ten seasons and 20 times overall winner, Bayern's favorites suffered their earliest exit since 2001 with a defeat on penalties against second division Holstein Kiel in the second round in January.
The surprise left the race for the cup was wide open and gave rivals such as Dortmund, Gladbach and RB Leipzig the best chance in years to win a cup.
For Gladbach’s coach Rose, the duel on Tuesday is a chance, a stalled last season before she moves to Dortmund at the end of the season.
After the 44-year-old made it to the top 4 placings and the knockout phases of Champions Le ague had led this season, his side fell to eighth place after four defeats in the last five league games.
Rose has come under increasing pressure after he announced his move to Dortmund earlier this month. Some fans and commentators asked him to resign.
But on Saturday he rejected the idea that there would be a conflict of interest if his Gladbach team competes against Dortmund this week.
« It is at all not difficult for me. I’m the coach of Borussia Mönchengladbach. I have goals with this club and am responsible for its sporting success and for my players, « he told Sky.
For Gladbach, the victory over Dortmund would be a first big title since 1995, the year in which they last won the cup.
Dortmund meanwhile hopes to get their hands on the trophy for the third time in the last decade, while RB Leipzig has a first big one Aspiring title.
The current second Bundesliga finalist of 2019, Leipzig, is probably the favorite before the quarter-finals against Wolfsburg on Wednesday.
But their opponents, who only won the cup in 2015, are also with six wins in the last seven games of all competitions in good shape.
