Zendaya is jumping from one awards season to the next as the upcoming Netflix release of her feature film « Malcolm & Marie » follows her surprising Emmy win for « Euphoria » in September. Zendaya’s appearance on HBO high school drama took home the Emmy for Outstanding Leading Actress in a Drama Series, making her the youngest actress to ever win the category. Now with « Malcolm & Marie », Zendaya is used for the Oscar race.
« Malcolm & Marie » plays « BlacKkKlansman » and « Tenet » favorites John David Washington and Zendaya as title characters. Malcolm is a film director and Marie is his girlfriend. The two are forced to grapple with the nature of their relationship after returning home from the world premiere of his new project and waiting for the critical reviews to come online.
Sam Levinson, the showrunner of « Euphoria » and a frequent director on the series, met with Zendaya on « Malcolm & Marie, » which they secretly shot together over the summer amid the pandemic. The cast and crew filmed the film in a quarantine bubble under security precautions. The film only plays Zendaya and Washington and is set entirely in one location, which allowed the production to maintain the quarantine bubble throughout the shoot. The film is Levinson’s first feature film since 2018 « Assassination Nation ».

After the production of « Malcolm & Marie » Levinson and Zendaya worked again on special episodes of « Euphoria », which should serve as a bridge between the first and second season of the HBO series. Production of the second season of « Euphoria » was supposed to start in March, but the pandemic delayed filming until early 2021. In the meantime, Zendaya and Levinson made the special episodes « Malcolm & Marie » and two « Euphoria ». The first Zendaya’s Rue special aired on HBO on December 6th.
« Malcom & Marie » is a last-minute addition to Netflix’s robust Oscar plan for the 2020-2021 awards season. The streaming giant picked up the black and white drama in September with a deal worth $ 30 million. The streamer is fighting for Zendaya as Best Actress, but she will face stiff competition from other Netflix competitors like Vanessa Kirby in « Pieces of a Woman » and Viola Davis in « Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. »
« Malcom & Marie « will be streamed on Netflix starting February 5th. Check out the drama trailer in the video below.
