A 4.2 magnitude earthquake struck near Santa Cruz on Saturday night, January 16, and tremors were felt in the Bay Area from San Jose to San Francisco. The quake was centered in Aromas, California and hit at 8:01 p.m., according to the US Geological Survey.
Meteorologist Rob Meyeda wrote on Twitter: “Preliminary 4.5 magnitude earthquake near Aromas, CA at 8:00 p.m. 1 o’clock. Note: It shook the lights and (well-anchored) large plasma screens on the set at @nbcbayarea. “
The earthquake was reported by the United States Geological Survey with an initial magnitude of 4.5, but was later adjusted to 4.2.

Steven Baumeister, captain of the Aromas Fire District, said his team was quick to review the situation . « Everything was in order. We checked the area quickly and there are no reports of damage or injuries, ”said Baumeister. « We got a couple of calls, but that’s it. » In the San Francisco Bay Area, BART trains were running at reduced speed and the tracks were being checked for damage. The website later updated their account and determined that no damage was found.

Investigative reporter Stephen Stock confirmed on Twitter that the first earthquake was felt in South San Francisco: « We felt a first quake in South San Jose, but not the aftershocks. »
This is the second earthquake in the Year 2021 in San Jose, as the city also experienced an earthquake on January 2nd. According to the Nicaraguan Institute for Territorial Studies (INETER), the quake occurred on Saturday, January 2, 2021 at 5:15 p.m. local time at a shallow depth of 10 km. Shallow earthquakes are more felt than deeper ones because they are closer to the surface. Cities or towns near the epicenter where the quake may have been felt as a very weak tremor are Puerto San José, 88 km from the epicenter, Iztapa 91 km away, and La Gomera 104 km away.
