Marseille: Marseille have appointed Jorge Sampaoli as their new coach, the troubled American owner Frank McCourt said in a statement on Friday.

McCourt, who promised « profound changes » at the club, also replaced President Jacques -Henri Eyraud, who has become the target of fan dissatisfaction, through sporting director Pablo Longoria.

Marseille, second when last season was abandoned, is seventh this season, 20 points behind leaders Lille.

« This is a new chapter for Olympique de Marseille and I personally am determined to make it a success, » McCourt said in the statement.

« I entrusted the club’s presidency to Pablo. His experience as a sporting director and talent scout is only matched by his love of the game. His main priority will be to put football back at the heart of OM. «

Sampaoli’s arrival had been expected since on February 22, he requested the termination of his contract with the Brazilian club Atletico Mineiro. He was responsible when they beat Palmeiras 2-0 in their last game of the season on Thursday and finished third in the table.

The 60-year-old is a former coach of Chile, Argentina and Seville. He has signed a contract with Marseille until June 2023.

« I’ve been told all my life that OM is a passion. That the velodrome lights up when the team goes into the stadium, » said Sampaoli, quoted in a press release of the club.

« Marseille is a popular club and I feel like in this heat. We’re not here to hide. We’re going to play hard. »

According to a source in his wake, Sampaoli was planning, immediately to fly to France. He may have to comply with the quarantine upon arrival.

Marseille will play in second place in Lyon on Sunday evening and in Lille on Wednesday. Nasser Larguet, head of the Marseille Academy, has been appointed interim manager.

Marseille’s home game against Rennes on January 30 at the Velodrome was postponed after angry fans attacked the club’s training ground while the players were there what the club called « the madness of unjustified violence ».

According to local police, 25 people were arrested and seven officers injured after several hundred ultras stormed La Commanderie in protest against club management and the team’s poor results .

Paris-born Eyraud was featured in banners hanging around the city after angering fans when he spoke of the « danger » of having too many Marseille residents or club fans working in the club.

At the time, McCourt called the protesters « thugs » and compared the incidents to the storming of the US Congress.

On Friday he promised « this week » di e city to meet with fans and fan group leaders to « discuss his long-term plans for the club, » which he bought in 2016.

Longoria, a 34-year-old Spaniard who is a scout for Newcastle started out and has worked for a number of clubs including Atalanta, Juventus and Sevilla, gained control of Marseille barely six months after joining last July to oversee player recruitment.

He was given the job of « To put football back at the heart of OM, » where Eyraud has been criticized for his business-minded approach.

« Football is inconceivable without passion and this appointment is a great honor for me that I have looked to since I joined into the world of football, « Longoria was quoted as saying in the club’s statement.
