World news – Justin Upton meets two towering homers in Angels’ loss to Brewers

THE GAME: Justin Upton scored two of the Angels’ five home races on Monday afternoon at American Family Fields in Phoenix, losing to Milwaukee Brewers 10-9.

PITCHING REPORT: Left-handed Andrew Heaney was the first Angels pitcher to re-enter a game that spring, taking advantage of a special rule that spring. He only picked up one on 23 pitches in the first game, so the angels pulled him. Heaney then came back to continue his outing on the second. He didn’t allow runs in the second or third, each time escaping with the help of ingenious doubles. « I think in the first inning I was trying to place balls, get a sense of thinking more about things, working on things and hitting points instead of just being aggressive in the zone, » said Heaney. “Nothing will tick you off but give up, give up four in the first and get taken out. That definitely helped me change my mind a little. I will definitely work on that. « … Right-handed Chris Rodriguez, who scored both goals on his debut, couldn’t get out of the inning this time. He got two outs, one on a strikeout, and gave up three runs, including a homer. … Right-handed Junior Guerra made his spring debut with 1-3 innings with no goal and one hit. Guerra was late at camp due to visa issues and is a non-squad invitee with a strong chance of breaking camp as a multi-inning helper.

HIT REPORT: Justin Upton hit a pair of homers, both moon shots that cleared the midfielder’s eye. Upton already has three homers this spring. Upton attributed his turnaround last season by focusing more on the center and the other way. « Just being able to stay through the middle keeps you on top of everything, keeps you on all pitches, » said Upton. « I was able to do a couple of off-speed spots early on in camp and I dealt with the fastball today, so if I try to keep that approach I think it can help me throughout the season.  » … Upton’s first homer of the day came shortly after Anthony Rendon strapped a homer over the right field fence, his first of the spring. … Shohei Ohtani had one of three bats. He’s 3 for 6 this spring. … Jordyn Adams also hit a homer with three runs over the bat’s eye. It was his first homer of the spring. … Jose Rojas buckled up his second homer of spring. … Jo Adell was singing. His bats have improved in the last few days since he eliminated his leg kick.

DEFENSE REPORT: Shortstop Jose Iglesias caught a pop-up in the flat left corner and then flipped it behind his back towards left fielder Upton so Upton could throw it into second place to double the runner. « I played with him in Detroit, you have to be prepared for anything, » said Upton. « I’ve seen him do it a couple of times, but he never turned the ball on me. » Iglesias and second baseman David Fletcher shot a chic double game. Iglesias went to his right to catch the ball and Fletcher made a quick relay. … Catcher Kurt Suzuki threw a throw into midfield and tried to pin down a runner.

IN THE B-GAME: There were no stats from the B-game against the Brewers on a backcourt earlier in the day, but Maddon was impressed by right-handed Dylan Bundy and left-handed Reid Detmers. Maddon said Bundy had worked three innings and given up a homer with three runs. Maddon said Detmers “was superb. Delivery, speed, place break ball. He had a nice day.  »
