Tim Edwards, head of Tickford Racing, has announced the length it would take Cameron Waters to optimize for a shot for the 2021 Supercars title.
Waters made sure he did this time one would be when it ended with a first solo race win last year, and then put the Monster Energy Mustang on pole for the Bathurst 1000 as it climbed to second place overall.
It underscores that potential and after the first three races of the season has three front row starts and two second placements. He could easily have won the inaugural event at Mount Panorama if the cards got in his way.
The 26-year-old also spent the summer pursuing a much-noted propensity in sprint racing that Edwards says that there is more than you think.

« [For example] in a sprint car, the route changes so much from the start of a race to the end of the race, and it’s not like you can come to your engineer in a sprint car and say, ‘Can you change the springs, the dampers, whatever ? ‘
« What you have is what you have, so you learn to adapt, you learn to drive around and I think he learned from that that his [Mustang] will not always be perfect for him, so he has to be learn to adapt his driving for the car as he drives. “
Waters has also adopted a new exercise program aimed at improving cardiovascular fitness. This is due to the length to which he will increase his chances of winning this year.

Waters has been a Tickford rider since 2014 and won the the following year Dunlop Super2 series title and 2017 Sandown 500 with Richie Stanaway.
Now that he’s been working with engineer Sam Potter for the third year in a row, he is said to have taken his step seriously.
« He’s got one great relationship with his engineer, he believes in the team, believes in himself …
» He’s done a lot of work outside of the supercar race, he’s driven a sprint car and done everything to keep himself sharp and focused, so there’s nothing. «

Waters was leading at the start of the third race at Sandown before finishing second behind Shane van Gisbergen and moving up one place to fifth in the Repco Supercars Championship.
Qualifying for race 4 and that Qualifying for race 5 will take place in consecutive sessions on Sunday from 10:30 am local time / AEDT.
