Lee Westwood leads the final round of the Players Championship on Sunday at TPC Sawgrass with two strokes and plays some of the best golf courses of his career.
If you ask the 47-year-old how he has done it in recent years managed to stay consistent, he would likely point to his caddy Helen Storey, who also happens to be his girlfriend.
Since 2018, when Storey started cadding for Westwood, their relationship has always stolen the show at games. Having your girlfriend as a caddy is certainly unconventional, but Westwood blamed Storey for keeping his feet on the ground.
« In my career, a caddy can’t tell me much, but Helen obviously gets me into one fantastic vibe and psychologically she can help me and say the things I need to hear, « said Westwood on Saturday. “It helps me immeasurably in that regard.” Westwood and Storey, 43, began their relationship after the English professional golfer and 16-year-old ex-wife Laurae Coltart split in 2015. The two were introduced by Graham Wylie, a good friend of Westwood’s who is also married to Storey’s sister Andrea.
Coltart, with whom Westwood has two children, claimed Lee had an affair – which he denied. And the two legally finalized their divorce in 2017. Storey was also married once before she met Westwood and has a daughter.
Their chemistry is obviously undeniable. Even Bryson DeChambeau, two shots behind Westwood on his way to Sunday, can see what Storey is doing for Westwood on the green.
« She keeps him calm and level-headed and she’s a rock, » DeChambeau said. « [She] focuses his mind on the right things and she was great for him. It’s one of his secret weapons I think. »
Storey has been Westwood’s caddy since he made it to the 2018 Denmark tournament. Before Storey, Billy Foster was Westwood’s caddy before their relationship ended due to a disagreement.
Westwood remembered Golf Week when Storey first saw him at a professional tournament. When Westwood cut a large patch of lawn on one of their first swings, Storey didn’t hesitate to pick up the slab of grass to fill the divot mark, as caddies often do.
« It goes so back with the divot, » said Westwood, holding his palm away from his body every week of golf to demonstrate.
When Westwood asked Storey what was going on, she replied, « I hope this isn’t a worm. »
Shortly after, Westwood was celebrating his first European Tour victory since 2014 at the Nedbank Challenge with Storey as caddy. She has been with him ever since. « Obviously, I get on well with Helen, » Westwood said Per Golf Week in 2019. « She doesn’t know much about golf, but she knows a lot about the way my mind works. She keeps me in a good mood and focuses on the right things at the right time.
The Instagram account of Storey reveals that she is a fitness enthusiast. She reportedly worked as a fitness trainer before landing her appearance as Westwood’s caddy.
Westwood is playing as well as it has been in about a decade when he played a number of Top – Had three placements in majors, but never won a major and winning the Players Championship would be the greatest of his career.
