World news – How kids in Queensland use phones for porn, TikTok

MOBILE phones in some public high schools on the Gold Coast are used to record embarrassing Tik Tok videos of teachers and hot-spot laptops are used to allow teenagers to access pornographic content.

One parent who refused to be named said children at his daughter’s high school took videos and photos of teachers and turned them into Tik Toks « to take the p ** s off teachers. »

« You wouldn’t believe what the kids are doing with their cell phones, » he said.

Another parent said her daughter was seven years old when she saw boys in her classroom looking for « anime (animation) porn » videos.

She said they were sitting in the back of the room and instead of using the school’s wifi, they used their cell phones to tag their laptops so they wouldn’t be spotted by the school.

« I’m dead to cell phones in schools unless they are needed for health or other essential reasons, » said the mother, who refused to be identified.

« Children just sit around on their phones during recess, it’s ridiculous they should actually connect with their peers, play sports, or engage in other activities.

« Why can’t they use their laptops when they are using phones for school work? They all have cameras and if they need to look up they have internet access. »

The Queensland government allows state high schools to work with their community to create their own guidelines for cell phones.

The Tasmanian, Western Australian and Victorian governments have banned cell phones in all state schools, and NSW and South Australia have banned them in public elementary schools.

Kym Amor, director of Foxwell State Secondary College, said her school’s policy required students to secure phones in lockers from 8:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

« Our parents and students respect this policy. The feedback has been that communication between students is much stronger and more positive without cell phones being distracted, » she said.

« Students and parents are satisfied that if urgent communication is required during the school day, there are procedures in place to assist.

« During our founding year in 2020 and until now in 2021, we did not have to deal with material violations of this policy. »

Christopher Capra, high principal of Palm Beach-Currumbin State, said 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students were prohibited from using cell phones on school premises.

« Older students are allowed to use cell phones for educational purposes during class time and under the other expectations set out in the Student Code of Conduct at all other times, » he said.

« Our older students are currently using their phones and associated applications for a variety of learning purposes. As our school has stopped using cell phones on campus over time, the current policy is subject to an annual review by the school community. »

Education Secretary Grace Grace said her government’s anti-cyberbullying task force looked at the issue of cell phones in schools in 2018 and recommended that schools have the autonomy to control student access to cell phones and other personal devices.

« To date, this year I have not received any correspondence from any stakeholder or community group advocating widespread bans on devices in schools, » she said.
