TRIBUTES WERE PAID TO Cork opera singer Cara O’Sullivan, who died yesterday at the age of 59 after being diagnosed with early-onset dementia in 2018.

« Cara’s voice had a liquidity and flexibility that have tackled some of the most demanding and brilliant soprano repertoires. But her voice was only part of the attraction.

« Cara had a warmth in her personality that kept attracting the audience. She knew how to get attention, she took the stage like it was her own kingdom, and she fed on the enthusiastic reactions of the audience. «

Uachtarán na hÉireann Michael D. Higgins said: » The news of Cara O’Sullivan’s death will have been received with great sadness by those who love and appreciate music.

« Cara O’Sullivan was proud of her Cork roots and always generous to local groups. She was a performer whose talents were recognized around the world. She has performed not only in local halls and festivals, but also at the Paris Opera, Sydney Opera House and Albert Hall in London. She shaped numerous productions of works by Mozart, Handel, Mendelsohn and Verdi.

« Sabina and I express our deepest condolences to her siblings, her daughter, her extended family and her large circle of friends. »

The former rugby player International player Donncha O’Callaghan said: “It’s so sad to hear of Cara O’Sullivan’s death. A beautiful voice and the nicest person.

« We will never forget the emotional energy it generated before our games. » Until you hear that bell, that last bell, get up and fight like hell! «
