World news – « Heavy with emotions »: Oils announce surprise gig

Midnight Oil will debut their new bassist at a one-off concert, but frontman Peter Garrett said the band's return will be emotional.

Before starting their Makarrata Live tour next week, the Oils will train their musical muscles with a one-off concert at the legendary Enmore Theater on February 25th.

The warm-up performance will be accompanied by special First Nations guests who worked on the No. 1 record The Makarrata Project, including Troy Cassar-Daley, Dan Sultan, Alice Skye, Leah Flanagan and Tasman Keith.

It will also be the public debut of bassist Adam Ventoura, the older brother of actor Zoe Ventoura, who takes on the role after the sudden death of popular band member Bones Hillman last year.

Ventoura landed on the Oils radar while guesting a recording session at guitarist and keyboardist Jim Moginie’s northern beach studio, and previously toured with Cold Chisel’s Ian Moss.

Frontman Peter Garrett said the band’s return to the stage after Hillman’s death will be « full of emotion ».

« It will be a moment full of emotion without our long-time brother in music going on stage, but Bonesy has always made it clear that he wanted these gigs to take place without him so that we could know that he was with us in spirit « said Garrett.

« We started rehearsing with Adam, who amazingly lived under our noses in Sydney. There is something primal about his playing that caught our ears and that makes the band sound great. »

Despite the logistical nightmare of bringing their Makarrata Live staff together from across the country amid sudden COVID border restrictions, the Oils managed to confirm a strong contingent of the album’s guest artists for the tour, which opens on February 28 at WOMADelaide .

Not only will these artists perform their songs from the record, but they will also be given the spotlight to share their own work with Oils fans.

« We’re fortunate that so many of the staff on our mini-album can take to the stage at these shows, and we continue to hope that one or two more of our friends can jump up with us here and there as well. » said drummer Rob Hirst.

« The message of these songs becomes more relevant as public awareness of The Uluru Statement continues to grow. It is time for Australia to stop dragging the chain on this issue and we urge the government to start the process of recognition of the Constitution for First Australians and to Begin Also note the call for a vote in the Bundestag.  »

The warm-up performances of the oils are legendary. Before the Great Circle world tour, which reunited the band, they performed at their old Selina beach pounding area in Coogee.

And before their 2019 concerts, they went to the very intimate Anita Theater in the small art town of Thirroul, near Wollongong.

The Enmore Theater, which will reopen next week after extensive renovations during the COVID lockdown, also plays an important role in the band’s history.

The rock band played two shows at the Enmore Theater in January 1986, making their debut as a rock and roll venue.

Advance sales for the band and Frontier Touring for the warm-up performance on February 25th will start on Wednesday at 11am. The general tickets are available on Thursday from 1 p.m.
