World news – Hairdresser defends himself after two floods

A hairdresser who donated her time to the victims of the 2019 flood is devastated after her salon was flooded with water twice in less than a month.

In a gruesome twist of fate, a Townsville hairdresser who selflessly donated her time to victims of the 2019 flood was devastated after her salon was flooded twice in less than a month.

Tracie’s hair and beauty in Annandale flooded just before Christmas after a pipe burst with a vanity.

The floor of the salon with walls, plinths, shelves and benches was badly damaged by a violent blow.

Owner Tracie Davis was able to operate around the destruction for a few weeks before closing the doors for the floor to be replaced.

« I was in the process of getting the floors installed on Monday and Tuesday and should be moving the furniture back in on Wednesday, » said Ms. Davis.

« But the builders who went in on Wednesday morning to plaster the called walls said the hot water system had burst and flooded the store.

« It was devastating. I wanted to set everything up by lunchtime and we wanted to work around the builders. I just want to open up, it’s my only source of income. Two floods in a month are just ridiculous. »

The selfless mother of three set up a makeshift evacuation center at the Annandale Community Center during the 2019 flood.

Armed with hairdryers, Ms. Davis and her team of volunteers took in around 100 evacuated residents from Idalia and Annandale.

Four months later, she had an operation for a brain tumor and is currently battling multiple myeloma, a blood cancer that attacks her bones.

Ms. Davis receives ongoing treatment for the disease that she says will never be cured, but she is still concerned for the people around her.

« My customers and employees are my top priority, I don’t want to let them down, » she said.

« I have clients that I had to cancel. If they had to do their hair for something, they might go elsewhere and I might not get it back. It’s a cutthroat deal at the end of the day. Competition is fierce, there is one Hairdresser on every corner.

« I have employees who need hours and wages. It’s not about me, it’s about my employees and customers.

« My insurance company has been great. They have been very supportive of me and take a lot of stress out of me by dealing with it as much as possible. »

Ms. Davis needs to replace the new floors that were just laid because of the second flood.
