GTA Online’s seemingly endless load times will soon be less obnoxious as Rockstar has confirmed that they are implementing a solution to a problem a player has discovered. In late February, someone known as « t0st » had a good rummage through the GTA code to find out why online loaded so much slower than single player and came up with a solution that made it 70% faster on their PC. Well, Rockstar says they have done some research, confirmed the issue, and made some changes that we’ll see in a future patch. Amazing scenes.
t0st wrote a lengthy blog post detailing the reverse engineering research and how the loading stalled for ages while the CPU parsed a JSON data file. They thought the method for doing this was extremely inefficient and wrote their own patch that fitted into the game with a faster method. This made GTAO load 70% faster for them, a number so wild that I was a little skeptical. While some player fixes for games did wonders, others were less reliable or misunderstood issues. Apparently this is real.
« After a thorough investigation, we can confirm that the first player actually revealed an aspect of the game code related to the PC version of GTA Online’s load time that could be improved, » said Rock star versus the happy RPS fanzine PC gamer. “As a result of this research, we’ve made some changes that will be implemented in an upcoming title update.”
I’ve never been more excited to throw up my hands and declare that I was wrong. I was wrong and oh god how wonderful that I was wrong. It’s grim to think that at least a full day of my life has been wasted on those stupid loading screens.
Rockstar didn’t say when the update would arrive and what improvements players could expect. It’s one of those issues that some computers might benefit from more than others, you know?
Second, they said in an update to their post yesterday, « I have an exceptional $ 10,000 stake in their H1 bonus right now received :)) (usually just for security reasons) « . Nice.
t0st also posted a « Proof of Concept » fix that people can see for themselves, although they warn that you may be banned. After having been banned for a mod mix-up myself, I won’t risk it again. I’m glad to be waiting for an official resolution to a problem, and I’m incredibly glad that I was proven wrong.
