RALEIGH (AP) – An additional 100 members of the North Carolina National Guard are traveling to Washington to help with security leading up to the inauguration of President-elect Joe Biden next week, Governor Roy Cooper’s office said Friday .
Cooper had previously announced that 200 guards would travel to the country’s capital to help government agencies in the face of last week’s mob attack on the US Capitol. Cooper spokesman Ford Porter confirmed the additional mobilizations.
The National Guard Bureau in Washington requested the additional personnel, Lt. Col. Matt DeVivo said in an email. All 300 guards serving in units of the military police, engineering and tank brigade in Asheville, Clinton and Raeford should be on site by Monday, DeVivo said.
At least 21,000 National Guard troops from the US have agreed to help with security at the opening in Washington on Wednesday.
Cooper had again called up 350 guards this week who will remain on duty in North Carolina.
On Wednesday, Cooper said, « The ongoing security concerns in Washington, DC and the country’s capitals after last week’s attack on the US Capitol must be taken seriously, and I will devote the resources necessary to keep the North Carolinians safe. «
