There won’t be a red carpet or star-studded crowd at the Golden Globes this Sunday, but there’s still a lot at stake at the first major Hollywood awards show of the year. Millions of viewers are expected to tune into the ceremony, which honors the best in film and television. But what should you look out for?
Here’s our quick guide to the event that will be held in Beverly Hills, California and New York:
Last year around this time, Netflix was Hollywood’s envy, the globes plentiful Champagne bottles put on ice.
An overwhelming 34 nominations seemed to signal the official coming of age of the streamer in Tinseltown with a torrent of victories.
But the ceremony didn’t follow the script and Netflix ended the night with only two wins With an astonishing 42 nods in the TV and Movie categories, the odds are looking even better this time around. But who knows after it was almost washed out last year?
– Colman / Cohen: double double? – One of Netflix’s rare wins last year was Olivia Colman, whose star as Britain’s Queen Elizabeth in The Crown was irresistible to Globes voters.
That wasn’t entirely surprising – Colman has never lost a Golden Globe, after implementing previous nods for The Favorite in 2019 and The Night Manager in 2017.
She can do better this year, with two nominations for another season of The Crown and best drama film contender The Father.
One British man, Sacha Baron Cohen, is a strong contender for two very different film roles, with Borat Subsequent MovieFilm and The Trial of the Chicago 7.
Colman’s co-star, The Father, is the legendary Anthony Hopkins A serious contender for awards every time he hits the big screen.
Surprisingly, he’s never won a competitive Golden Globe, despite being nominated seven times back in 1979 and s ogar received a Lifetime Achievement Award.
When he won an Oscar in 1992 for his terrible twist on The Silence of the Lambs, the Globes voters in The Prince of Tides somehow plopped for Nick Nolte.
When they Hollywood Foreign Press Association corrected the wrong thing this year, crowning 83-year-old Hopkins as their oldest best actor of all time.
American immigrant stories like The Farewell (2019) have repeatedly been excluded from the « main » categories of best film awards because half or more of the script was not in English.
Critics have noted that the rule did not appear to apply to previous heavyweight competitors like Quentin Tarantino’s multilingual Inglourious Basterds.
This year Minari has been the subject of many acts, and Farewell director Lulu Wang tweeted that she had « seen no more American movie » than the acclaimed Korean family drama a with immigrants.
Of course, taking part in the foreign language section at the Globes last year didn’t hurt South Korea’s parasite, which won the biggest prize of all – the Oscar for best picture.

The move should allow more high-profile guests to personally present awards – including Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones from the Big Apple – even if the nominees have to stay at home.
Since the Oscars are now planning from several locations from broadcasting, the Academy will closely monitor whether Fey and Poehler can establish their usual relationship from different sides of the country.
