Mick McCarthy has made a surprise return to club management after taking over as Cypriot team manager APOEL Nicosia, signing a deal until May 2022

The 62-year-old has been unemployed since leaving his post with the Republic of Ireland in April this year and has not worked at club level since his sacking by Ipswich Town in 2018

APOEL has confirmed that Terry Connor – who worked as McCarthy’s assistant at Wolves, Ipswich and in the Republic of Ireland – has also been recruited

McCarthy’s new side have won the Cypriot title 28 times but have started the 2020-21 season poorly, winning just two of their first six league games

The club finished third in the standings last season, earning a place in the Europa League, but were eliminated from the competition in the play-off final by Slovan Liberec of the Czech Republic

A four-game winless streak was the end of Greek coach Marinos Ouzounidis, Nicosia’s 12th permanent coach since 2015

A statement on the official APOEL website said of McCarthy and Connor: « We welcome both of you to APOEL and we wish them immediately to help the team return to good and substantial performance. so that she can achieve her goals, which are to win titles «

The current APOEL squad includes former Sheffield Wednesday striker Atdhe Nuhiu and former Chelsea youngster Ben Sahar and McCarthy’s first game in charge will be against Ethnikos Achna on Saturday

McCarthy began his managerial career at Millwall before his first stint as boss of the Republic of Ireland between 1996 and 2002

He was then promoted to the Premier League at Sunderland and Wolves, staying at Molineux for more than five and a half years before being fired in 2012
