A spokesperson for Devon and Cornwall Police said: ‘Police were called at 12.25pm today at the M5 in Cullompton over concerns for the welfare of a person on the northbound carriageway.
“The road was closed in both directions between junction 26-27 to allow the air ambulance to land and emergency services to access the scene.
Highways England expects the northern section of the motorway to be closed this afternoon
A spokesperson said: “The M5 is currently blocked in both directions between junctions 27 and 26 and we will be releasing a traffic advisor very soon.
« This is a police-led incident and we expect the northern direction to be closed for some time this afternoon while the police investigate. »
