The aviation industry "needs to know the Scottish government is on their side"

Aviation unions have warned the Scottish government that’ doing nothing is not an option ‘amid threat of airport job cuts with end of leave scheme

Joint union representatives – including GMB and Unite – are due to meet with the Scottish Government Secretary for Transport on Thursday afternoon to present proposals to maintain employment

The move comes just days before the UK government’s Job Maintenance Program (JRS) was replaced by the Employment Support Program (JSS)

GMB Scotland organizer Bob Deavy said: “The Scottish government has said the UK government needs to do more, it’s right, but it also means it needs to let go of its own ambiguities that could help the sector to recover after Covid-19, such as support for a third Heathrow runway and the increase in jobs and connectivity that this would give Scotland

“Our members should know that the Scottish Government is on their side in the immediate fight for jobs but also in the fight for the future of a sustainable aviation sector – it cannot be left to the UK government alone will decide their fate and we need an interdependent approach «

Pat McIlvogue, Industry Manager for Unite Scotland, said: “The aviation industry is on the brink and doing nothing is not an option for thousands of workers and their families across the world. Scotland who depend on their jobs at airports

« The looming end of the leave program is another peak time for aviation jobs, there will be pain, but there is still hope for the sector and we want the government to Scottish engages significantly with our members in line with his fair labor principles «

A study commissioned by Unite Scotland has found that switching to JSS could impact more than 2,300 direct and indirect jobs dependent on aviation, with a loss of £ 140million to the Scottish economy

Cabinet Secretary Michael Matheson MSP told Parliament last month the Scottish government was « committed to exploring immediate support measures for the (aviation) industry »

The Scottish government has repeatedly argued that expanding JRS would help reduce unemployment across the country

Measures such as the 14 quarantine rules for some travelers have reportedly had a negative impact on the tourism and travel industry, although they were introduced to limit the spread of the coronavirus
