World news – GB – Alex Runarsson’s first words after sealing Arsenal transfer

Arsenal have confirmed their sixth major summer signing of the summer with Alex Runarsson joining from Dijon

Arsenal have confirmed their sixth major summer signing of the summer with Alex Runarsson joining from Dijon

The Iceland international has joined the Gunners from Ligue 1 side Dijon in a deal understood to be worth around £1million and is the direct replacement for Emiliano Martinez who sealed a move to Aston Villa last week.

Prior to the announcement, as many as five major deals had been completed by the north London outfit thus far in the summer transfer window.

Two of which were already confirmed before last season concluded as Pablo Mari and Cedric Soares’ loan deals were officially made permanent when the summer window opened.

That was followed up with the signing of Willian on a free transfer after his contract expired at London rivals Chelsea.

Signing number four came in the shape of Gabriel Magalhaes from Ligue 1 outfit Lille for a reported £25m fee and the central defender had a debut to remember against Fulham.

Meanwhile, Dani Ceballos is back at the Emirates Stadium on another season-long loan deal from Real Madrid.

« I’m just extremely happy, extremely proud, it is a big day for me and my family. I can’t wait to get started! » he told Arsenal.com. « It is one of the biggest clubs in the world – they’ve won the Premier League 13 times, the FA Cup 14 times, it is a huge club and obviously playing in the Premier League as well, it is a win-win situation.

« I know it is going to be a lot of hard work, but I am ready to do everything I can to get the most amount of minutes as possible. »

There’s already a familiar face at the club in goalkeeping coach Inaki Cana and the Spaniard was a key factor in Runarsson making the move to north London.

« Our relationship, since we got to know each other four years ago, has been very good, » he addd. « We have always been in contact even though I was playing in France and he was coaching here in England.

« The fact that he is here, it is very important to me that I know somebody here and I know that he knows my qualities, and what I need to improve and what I can bring to the club. I think we will be a very good match, for the second time in my career! »
