NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Two people have died after carbon monoxide incident in a building in Brooklyn
Two dozen residents of the Bensonhurst apartment building were stranded late Monday night trying to find out where they were going to sleep after two of their neighbors died in apparent poisoning in the apartment building earlier that evening, reported Jessica Layton from CBS2
Many residents have said they have been feeling sick for days and now it seems they know why
A 911 call led first responders to 170 Avenue O, where two men were found unconscious inside the building. Hazardous Materials Protective Equipment authorities quickly realized they were facing a carbon monoxide situation
Four other people living in the building said they felt unwell They were treated at the scene Police said the deceased men, aged 49 and 50, were found dead in the basement A younger brother of one of the victims collapsed explaining how his brother was like a father to him
Another resident said he and his girlfriend ended up in hospital on Sunday, adding that he thought he had COVID-19 early
« This is something that could have been avoided with the carbon monoxide detectors The detectors would have gone off and they would have called 911 and it would not have happened, » said an official at FDNY
Many people living in the building said they had thought the carbon monoxide issue had been a problem for days They said they felt nauseous and dizzy to the point of passing out
