Paris: Three-time champions New Zealand and three-time runners-up France will compete in a blockbuster opening match of the 2023 Rugby World Cup, organizers announced on Friday.

The two nations have teamed up to bring together some of the most famous games in the tournament’s history, including the finals in 1987 and 2011, both won by the All Blacks.

France and New Zealand will host the Stade de France on Friday 8 September 2023 at Paris Open 10th edition.

In the national stadium, the two-time champions Australia will play against an undecided European team in Pool C. Ireland will open on the same Saturday in Weinbau Bordeaux, also against a European team in Pool B.

On a blockbuster opening weekend, the 2019 finalists are in action in the south of Marseille. Defending champions South Africa will fight for a fourth world title against Scotland in Pool B on September 10, the day after defeated finalist England – the 2003 champions – face Argentina at the Stade Velodrome with 67,000 players in Pool D.

Wales and the flamboyant Fiji meet on September 10th at Pool C in Bordeaux in a normally spectacular affair full of lively, offensive rugby. Their last group game at the 2019 World Cup in Japan ended with a 29-17 win for Wales.

The 20-team tournament was extended to eight weeks, taking into account the well-being of the players. An enlarged squad of 33 players with at least five days between games for all teams helps with recovery and preparation.

The games will be played in nine cities across France, with at least four games in each city. All games will take place between Wednesday and Sunday to maximize fan participation. The organizers said the details of the ticketing will be announced next Thursday.

« It was developed with teams and fans in mind and we are confident that it will be the best possible platform for an exciting, historic and very special rugby World Cup will offer, « said Bill Beaumont, chairman of the Rugby World Cup. “I know I’m speaking to fans around the world when I say 2023 can’t come fast enough.”

Vice-Chairman Bernard Laporte was optimistic that the tournament will spark the public’s imagination, as it did when France lost in 2007.

« It has it all: the 20 best teams in the world, 48 games and 51 festive days, » said Laporte, who coached France in 2007 and is now president of the French Rugby Federation is. « This game plan will delight rugby lovers around the world. » . We gave every host city the opportunity to shine. “

The pool phase for the 2023 tournament ends with the meeting of the six nation rivals Scotland and Ireland on October 7th in Paris and the popular Japan versus Argentina on October 8th in Nantes.

The Stade de France, with a capacity of 80,000 players, will host the final, semi-finals and playoffs for third place on October 28th.

The game between New Zealand and France in Pool A is reminiscent of the dramatic semi-finals in 1999 and the quarter-finals in 2007 , both won by Les Tricolores.

France should benefit from the home game and are on the rise with one of the most talented young squads in the international game.
