ORONO, Maine – University of Maine hockey coach Red Gendron died unexpectedly on Friday, the school said. He was 63 years old.

The Boston native, who coached the Black Bears in 2013, died after a medical emergency.

« Words cannot express our deep sorrow over the tragic, sudden loss of Red Gendron « said Sporting Director Ken Ralph. « Our community and the entire UMaine athletics family mourn the loss of coach Gendron. »

Maine’s best season under Gendron ended early when the coronavirus pandemic broke out in March 2020. The team had an 18-11-5 record before the Hockey East playoffs were canceled. That year he was a finalist for the Spencer Penrose Award, which was given to the nation’s best coach.

Gendron has held many coaching positions throughout his career and was assistant to the New Jersey Devils from 1994-95 when she was the Won the Stanley Cup. He also served as the coach of the Indiana Ice and Albany River Rats.

He came to Maine after serving as an assistant coach at UMass and an associate coach at Harvard. Gendron joined UMass in 2005 and worked on the program’s first NCAA tournament course in 2007.

« He has recruited a lot of real high-end hockey payers who are still in the NHL for UMass. On a personal level, Red, more than any other coach in Hockey East really reached out and welcomed me when I got into the league. We had a very nice friendship. We saw a lot of each other. When we played Maine, you knew it was going to be the good old days and tough hockey, ”said UMass coach Greg Carvel. “He was good for college hockey. He was a big, loving personality and when he walked into the room the energy went to him. He cared for people and treated people really well. He will be missed. «

» He was a force in UMaine Athletics and in the legacy of our men’s ice hockey program, « she said. » We mourn him and remember his many contributions to generations of players, that he oversaw and the program that illuminated the Black Bear Nation and the state of Maine. «
