The Shapovalov-Auger-Aliassime match was only the fifth Grand Slam meeting between the two Canadian men in the Open Era.

« I was flawless and played a great game, » said Auger-Aliassime, a Montreal native. « Of course it’s a shame that we have to play against each other.

» Hopefully we will meet later in the tournament in the future, but I can just be happy about my performance today. «

Auger-Aliassime is now 2nd : 2 at the highest level against Shapovalov from Richmond Hill, Ont.

The 20-year-old Auger-Aliassime reached the round of 16 with a Grand Slam. He also reached the fourth round at last year’s US Open.

Auger -Aliassime, longtime friend, first met Shapovalov more than a decade ago at a Toronto national tennis camp when they were both under 10. Auger-Aliassime is a year younger than Shapovalov.

Shapovalov stayed for part his unlikely run to the semi-finals at the Rogers Cup 2017 at Auger-Aliassime.

« It’s never easy to play against Denis, » said Auger-Aliassime after the game on the pitch.

Auger-Aliassime won 77 Percent of points when he got his first serve, 16 Percent better than Shapovalov.

« The conditions are here, especially when it’s warmer, » he said of his success in Melbourne. « The balls are a little livelier and faster on the courts.

» I think a big part of it for me is when this tournament falls at the beginning of the year. Obviously I’ve had injury issues later in the season but we can head to the Australian Open for many weeks as part of the off-season with no immediate pressure to rush to the next tournament … I think I can be healthier, Come here fitter and fresher. I think that fits well with the conditions.
