US President-elect Joe Biden is sworn in today as the 46th President of the United States.
Top European Union officials said Wednesday that they were relieved to have a friend in the White House again, as Joe Biden replaces Donald Trump.
Charles Michel, President of the European Council, said the moment should be used to form a new « founding pact » between democratic powers.
It was presented in the European Parliament by Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Council, came to address MEPs hours before Biden’s inauguration.
« This venerable ceremony on the steps of the US Capitol will be proof of the resilience of American democracy, » she said.
« And resounding proof that Europe has a friend in the White House again after four long years. »
However, the top Brussels official warned that millions of Americans are in favor of Trum p had voted and that some of them had rioted on his behalf on January 6th, which should serve as a warning.
« President Trump may be history in a few hours, but his supporters remain. More than 70 million Americans voted for Trump in the elections, « she said.
» A few hundred of them stormed the Capitol in Washington, the heart of American democracy, a few days ago.
« And so it looks It really matters when words are turned into deeds, when hate speech and false news pose a real threat to democracy, « she said.
» Although there is an established democracy embedded here, we cannot assume that we are against it Phenomena are immune. «
Von der Leyen compared the US uprising to a recent attempt by German activists to storm the Reichstag in Berlin in protest against coronavirus lockdown measures.
And she cited the case of Jo Cox, a British MP who was murdered by a far-right activist weeks before Britain’s vote to leave the European Union.
« Of course there are differences to storming the Capitol, but there are people too n here who feel uncomfortable and angry, « she warned.
Europeans should beware of » people who cling to rampant conspiracy theories, an often confused mix of completely absurd fantasies, « she said.
Michel, who hoped to receive Biden at an EU-US summit parallel to a NATO meeting in Brussels at the beginning of the new president’s term of office, was more optimistic.
« Law, order and democracy have opposed this shameful attempt to overthrow the elections. American democracy has demonstrated its strength and resilience, « he said.
» Let’s build a new founding pact for a stronger Europe, a stronger America, and a better world. «
