Fantasy football at its core is largely an exercise in math, especially probability. A significant level of game theory is also required when navigating the daily fantasy formats. What is your competition going to do and how can you be different?
This is what drives the opposing lineup. Big tournaments in particular require you to go against the grain by picking players or stacking games that aren’t popular this week in order to break away from the pack and have the best chance of finishing first and making significant money / p> This becomes even more tricky and risky with short tables. The shorter the daily imagination, the fewer options there are. The fewer options there are, the more popular the top options become. This also means less variety in the cheap value options.
A good example is the playoff list of the four games this weekend. How do you make sure you separate yourself from the crowds? We have an idea, but you won’t like it. We’re going to let the Brown Chiefs game fade away.
It has by far the highest over / under total that will make it popular. It has star power that will make it popular. The offenses are diverse, making their cheap options the most popular cheap options.
And the more popular, the harder it is to part. The risk of making this game difficult: you will be with the crowds, have to play this game as expected, the exact players you choose are the ones who determine the scoring, and have just the right combination of value options. That’s a lot of hurdles.
If we let this game fade, our players still have to do well, but if, for example, Browns Chiefs underperform well (think a 24-10 type game) we’re in one in pretty good shape to take advantage of the crowds.
Next, choose the game we want to stack up: Not Ravens-Bills as it can be nasty and windy. No rams packers because the rams are best at stopping what packers do best. Which leaves us with buccaneer saints, not a bad option.
At DraftKings, we connect Tom Brady with Mike Evans. We counter on the side of the saints with Alvin Kamara and Michael Thomas. Then we move on to other places.
We really want Stefon Diggs. We like the Rams defense / specialty teams best. With what we have left we want another Buc, so we’re going cheap with Cameron Brate on the tight end. Then fill in the rest with Rams RB Cam Akers and Robert Tonyan at Flex.
Lineup discontinued. With all these wins, what new car do we want to buy?
We like the price, and we like the fact that Cleveland is likely to have to keep up with the explosive Chiefs.
