Denis Shapovalov
, The Canadian press
Two of the best young tennis players made sure that the first day of the first major of the year went well after midnight.
Denis Shapovalov with starting number 11 defeated Jannik Sinner in a nearly four-hour marathon in the Margaret Court Arena with 3: 6, 6: 3, 6: 2, 4: 6, 6: 4. It ended at 12:49 pm local time.
This meant that the 21 year old Shapovalov who did not was used to being the older player on the field, avoiding defeat in the first round at Melbourne Park for the second time in a row.
For the 19-year-old Sinner it was an early end to his fifth major and an up and from month down in Down Under.
Since his defeat by Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals of the French Open, he has collected his first two ATP titles.
Sinner won the Great Ocean Road Open on Sunday and extended his winning streak 10 games including his first ATP title in Sofia last November. This made him the youngest player to win consecutive titles on the ATP Tour since 1995, when a 19-year-old Nadal won in China and Madrid in 2005.
