The Cincinnati Bearcats aim to win for the first time this season when they visit the Wichita State Shockers on Sunday as a 2.5-point underdog. The Bearcats scored a SU and ATS win in five games with a 76:69 win over SMU on Thursday, while the Shockers bounced back after a 70:63 loss in Houston that stopped a winning streak in five games
Here’s a look at the chances and trends ahead of the AAC matchup on Sunday afternoon in the Charles Koch Arena.
It was a difficult start to the 2020/2021 campaign for the Bearcats, which took place in 12 won their last 16 games last season to secure a top spot in the AAC conference standings. Cincinnati has made a 3-6 SU start, with two of their wins coming early against lightweights Lipscomb and Furman.

The Bearcats have been a massive disappointment since counting those wins, losing SU and ATS in five of their last six, including downright losses to South Florida, Georgia, Central Florida and Tulsa while they were classified as competition chalk. Last week’s victory over Southern Methodist is welcome, but far from reassuring. Cincinnati stayed behind for most of that competition, seeing a nine-point lead in the first half and an eight-point lead after the break before running a 10-2 run in the final two minutes to secure victory .
Cincinnati has been consistent from the start, with four scoring double-digit points. A pair of sophomores led the attack. Jeremiah Davenport was leading by 18 points, adding 10 rebounds to record his first double-double of the season. The Bearcats victory, however, depended on the team’s rare success beyond the bow. In 3-point attempts, it was 10:23, driven by four Treys of the second guard Mika Adams-Woods.

This is a departure from the team’s recent struggles to find the target as the Bearcats shooters made three times less than 40% field attempts in six games during their current swoon. Cincy only exceeded 70 points twice in this distance and reduced her to 101st place in the adapted offensive efficiency at Kenpom. The road to Cincinnati has also been consistently unfriendly since the beginning of last season. The Bearcats have had a mediocre 6-10 SU winning streak in their last 16 away competitions. The victory over the SMU marks their first road win of the current season. Additionally, Cincy has only covered five of 19 street appointments since early February 2019.
The Shockers are returning home to recover from a disappointing 70-63 loss to Houston No. 11. WSU led by up to 10 points in the second half but quickly lost the pace while remaining goalless for seven minutes. Wednesday’s defeat not only brought a 5-0 SU run, it also stopped a three-game stretch in which the Shockers averaged 82 points.
It couldn’t have been much worse for Wichita State since he had a 10-point lead in the first 90 seconds of the second half in Houston.
It could have been much worse without second guard Tyson Etienne’s game. The WSU’s leading goalscorer was leading with 25 points and eight rebounds and was one of only two shockers who scored more than five points. Etienne has needed little help on the street lately. In the last three away games, he’s averaged 28 points and six rebounds per game.
However, the budding star hasn’t produced such big numbers at home this season, averaging just 15.6 points per game in total and just 19 total points in his last two home dates. Etienne has averaged just nine points per game in two previous dates with the Bearcats.

With a shaky start for the Bearcats, this would be a good time for Wichita State to score an SU loss in six games against their AAC rivals. However, with Etienne being forced to single-handedly carry out the attack, and Cincinnati is showing signs of breaking out of his season opening funk, the Shockers will need a much greater team effort to finish this slide.
