PRESIDENT Xi Jinping urged the world to abandon « ideological prejudices » and eschew an « outdated Cold War mentality » as he signaled that China would continue on its own path regardless of Western criticism .
He called for a return to mutual respect to aid recovery from the pandemic, saying that « confrontation will lead us to an impasse ». It is important to remain committed to international law and rules, « instead of remaining committed to supremacy, » he said Monday in his first address on the Davos agenda since Joe Biden joined the White House.
« Forming small circles and starting a new Cold War, rejecting, threatening or intimating others, deliberately decoupling, imposing supply disruptions or sanctions, or creating isolation or alienation will only drive the world into division and even confrontation » he said said. His speech was widely anticipated for the tone it will set for relationships among the world’s largest economies over the next four years. It was more defensive than his address to Davos four years ago, days before Donald Trump’s inauguration. Mr. Xi repeated many of the same speeches about multilateralism and « win-win » results, but also signaled that he had no intention of changing course in the face of US pressure.
