World News – CA – What would Brandon Graham advise for battling Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz

PHILADELPHIA – Brandon Graham spent the early part of the 2010s in uncertainty about his football future. The earlier first-round pick lost an early season to injury, and then the Eagles’ defensive end saw much of that time from the bench as well.

He didn’t become a full-time starter until his sixth season in the league and has done well for the past five years. So he knows what it is like to be a player with expectations and come up short. And he also knows it’s possible for a second act or a comeback.

The Eagles placed quarterback Carson Wentz in favor of rookie Jalen Hurts earlier this week. Wentz’s future is very uncertain not only in Philadelphia but also in the NFL. Graham was previously in a similar, albeit lesser-known, scenario. And during a Thursday morning Zoom call, Graham shared his advice for Wentz.

« Try not to worry about what people are going to say because only you know what’s going on and how to fix it, » said Graham. “And how you fix it really depends on the things that you need to improve and the things that keep coming up. So for me it is important that I get off the ball faster. I have to do this for myself. When people are telling you what they see from the outside in, you need to make those decisions. Keep working hard. Keep building where you are weak.

« You definitely know you can go where you used to be because we all still have a lot of faith in Carson. We saw it. We know it’s only up to him to go out and keep working like he does. So don’t worry about what the naysayers are saying. It doesn’t matter because you are the one who can change what people are saying by working. That is what kept me here, how hard I worked and how hard I tried to turn the negative and turn it into a positive. ”

On Wednesday, coach Doug Pederson said it was up to Wentz to « embrace » and « understand » his current situation in order to make it the positive outcome Graham mentioned. After sitting on a bench in the Packers game, Wentz said he didn’t necessarily think sitting out would help him turn the season around.

But Wentz had been one of the NFL’s worst quarterbacks for the first three quarters of the season, and there was little evidence that he was about to change his performance.

Injuries are going to get his chance, and Pederson wouldn’t settle on a quarterback decision beyond Sunday against the Saints.

Wentz could get another chance. Graham got chances later in his career after early fighting. It’s only up to the quarterback to take advantage of them and turn his current position into a positive one for his career.
