Mike Ware turned the clock back on Thursday, looking more like a Masters champ than a rookie on the Champions Tour.
The 50-year-old from Brightz Grove spent most of the day near the front page of the leaderboard, pitting three Birds against just two Ghosts to evenly end his tour.
« I feel so confident here, it feels great, » said Ware.
. « Obviously the tournament plays for too long for me, but the Greens are soft enough that if you have some long clubs in you can get the ball to pause on these greens.
Weir plays a full schedule on the Champions Tour this season with the Top 10 in the Senior Player Tournament, and runner-up finish by Phil Mickelson at Dominion Energy Classic.
“I am so disappointed at 71, that I would have been happier for the past 10 years,” Weir said.. « Overall, however, it’s still a good start.
Weir won his green jacket in 2003 and is one of four Canadians with a master’s degree.
It was a frustrating day for Corey Conners and Adam Haddwin, especially with an iron in their hands.
After his tour, Konners said, « I drove it really well, I wasn’t as good at ferrets as I wanted it to. ». “The times I got out of my position, I wasn’t able to save myself and make that rescue. I had a bunch of ghosts on the front of the nine, all of which could have been avoided.
Konners made four ghosts against two birds in his first nine, and with the course smooth and windy, it wasn’t the start he had hoped for. He made two more ghosts on his back nine, but kept his respectable degrees with an eagle in the hole of Bar 5 15.
The 28-year-old was in the first set of the tee on Thursday, but after just 25 minutes of play, the horn went off and players had to leave the field due to nearby lightning and torrential rain..
“I didn’t think this had a negative effect on me, really,” said Conner.. « I just sat in the box lounge, ate a second breakfast, then had a third breakfast, and drank a few bottles of water..
Haddwin said, « My iron play was horrific, horrific. ». “I’m not sure I had a good iron bullet today, at least one that I’m fine with. It’s so frustrating. I thought this course was really cool, obviously, with smoothness, then driving it like I did.
The 33-year-old Haddwin plays in the third Masters tournament and said his training rounds went well and was comfortably hitting both a fade and a tie with the Greens controlling earlier in the week..
“I don’t trust any golf swing with an iron right now,” Hadwin said, before heading to the driving range. “I got lost like I had ever hit an iron.”.
