REUTERS: Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said he sympathized with Slaven Bilic after the Croatian on Wednesday (16. December) was sacked by West Bromwich Albion, stressing the need for clubs to think about long-term continuity rather than immediate results.
Bilic helped West Brom advance to the Premier League but was sacked after finishing second with a 13-game win after a dismal start to the season.
Solskjaer is also on trial after his team was eliminated from the Champions League group stage last week.
« I think those times of a pandemic and what happened made everyone sit back and think. . . I am very sad to hear that Slaven lost his job. He did a great job promoting them, « Solskjaer told reporters.
« Hopefully more and more clubs think long term. It’s a short term business and you need short term results but everyone knows continuity is the key to success and sometimes they don’t have the patience for it. «
The main focus is also on Sheffield United’s Chris Wilder, who is bottom of the table with one point after 12 games before Manchester United’s visit on Thursday.
« Being a manager is not a good position. You want your players to play, think and believe with confidence that they can win the game, « added Solskjaer.
« In Cardiff (city) it was a new experience, a learning experience and a valuable one. I didn’t enjoy with the results and relegation we’ve achieved, but as a manager you’re one of the few if you don’t eventually feel the pressure.
« I felt it and Chris, Slaven, whoever feels this pressure is mentally strong enough because it has to be you. «
Solskjaer said striker Edinson Cavani was a doubt about the trip while injured fringe players Phil Jones (knee) and Marcos Rojo (calf) should be ready next month.
