LENNOX LEWIS has named Evander Holyfield as his toughest opponent ahead of Mike Tyson and Vitali Klitschko.

British boxing legend, 54, took to Instagram to reveal who he thought his most talented rival was.

Despite battling legendary champions Tyson and Klitschko during his long career, Lewis flopped for Holyfield as his toughest opponent of all time.

Lewis ended his career on a 41-2-1 record, with his last fights being against Tyson and Klitschko in 2002 and 2003.

Great Britain’s KOd Tyson in the eighth round of a brutal fight whose fight against Klitschko was interrupted after the sixth round after Lewis opened a huge cut over the Ukrainian’s eye.

The first bout ended in a draw, and Lewis won the rematch by unanimous decision eight months later.

Lewis revealed that people are often shocked by his choice, but claimed that Holyfield’s amateur experience was invaluable to his career.

On Instagram, Lewis wrote: « People seem really surprised when I tell them Evander Holyfield was my toughest opponent, not to be confused with my toughest fight, which was Mercer.

« But if you really think about why that is, it actually makes a lot of sense.

« Holyfield, like myself, has an extensive amateur pedigree that has served him well throughout his professional career.

« Before moving up to the heavyweight division, he was a man who cleared out the cruiserweight division to become the undisputed champion and arguably the best of all time in this weight division.

« That’s a lot of experience and it’s safe to say that he saw it all when we met for the undisputed heavyweight championship in 1999.

« When you combine Evander’s amateur and professional experience, you will find it difficult not to see the success he has had in the ring.

« I can annoy him a bit on our two fights, he knows I won both fights although he won’t admit it, but seriously, he’s the only man who has done 24 laps with me. «

Lewis also emphasized the importance of building a career from a strong amateur base.

« Think of the amateurs as your internship with the professionals. . . The more you learn about your craft, the better it will serve you.

« In a sport where there are no guarantees and where even a mistake can lead to disaster, it’s important to take your chances.

« While we both had setbacks in our careers, there was little chance that the success we were striving for in boxing would not be achieved based on our experience. «
