Country music star Garth Brooks fought back tears during his Sunday live holiday special while performing a rare, full version of Belleau Wood.
The singer paused in the middle of the song, based on the 1914 armistice in World War I, to speak out during the Garth & Trisha Live! A holiday concert on CBS.
Belleau Wood tells the story of the Armistice on the Western Front of 1914 during World War I among British, French and German soldiers. Before the performance, his wife, Trisha Yearwood, said, « Good luck, buddy, » and admitted the song made her cry.
Garth stated that he always made an abridged version of the song when requested during live shows, admitting, « I love this whole story. « »
He closed his eyes as he sang about soldiers laying down their arms and gathering at Christmas to sing the Silent Night, but stopped playing when he was overwhelmed with emotion and said, « I’ll get this » before he played and sang again.
The star’s voice broke again as he sang about the soldiers who eventually resumed their fighting and said to the audience, « Almost there, so sorry » as he and Trisha dried their eyes.
During the show, which was broadcast live from their home studio G, the two performed a number of vacation hits – including classic covers and original music – and provided a glimpse into their family life together.
