TORONTO –
At Ontario factory, scientists assemble approved, made-in-Canada COVID-19 rapid test that requires no refrigeration and delivers results within an hour

Called Triplelock Test Strips, the rapid test performed by Precision Biomonitoring received Health Canada approval this week for use across the country

In Thunder Bay, Ontario, a health and safety company became one of the first to use it, testing workers and employees in northern Ontario communities.

Donna Nordstrom, CEO of NorthStream Safety & Rehab, told CTV News they have seen « huge interest » in rapid tests, especially with employers who run large operations like mines and logging camps

– Anywhere they have to put their employees to work, and it’s inevitable to be near one another while you are working, this has kind of been a game-changer for businesses, a ???? she said

His company performs drug and alcohol testing, as well as professional testing and training services for employees in various fields

“When we saw that there was a problem for companies trying to make their employees work safely, we thought it was an opportunity to help them be able to do it,” she said at ???? A quick test will allow them to have a worker tested and get the results in a matter of hours.

She said they could do nine tests at a time, and once the swabs used to take the test are in the machine that processes them, it only takes 65 minutes from there to get a result.

Turnaround time is a huge improvement over provincial testing, which can take up to a week to get results, especially in more remote areas of the province

at ???? Our test is designed for situations where you need to have results now, â € “ Mario Thomas, CEO of Precision Biomonitoring, told CTV News – And that’s why it’s transportable You can run it in a context labâ ????

It comes at a cost – over $ 100 per test, plus manpower for a technician to process it.But companies are willing to pay if it means avoiding their entire business shutdown due to a epidemic

“If these businesses can’t stay open, employees can’t continue to work,” says Dr. David Savage, an emergency physician in Thunder Bay who is also a consultant physician with NorthStream – This can be devastating for families in the Northwest who are already suffering on many levels from food shortages and that sort of thingâ ????

The tests are made in solid form as opposed to the liquid form of most other tests, which must be kept in the refrigerator so as not to degrade. This means that the new tests can be used in remote communities as they can be transported without refrigeration

at ???? Our test is stable at room temperature, can be transported, and will maintain its performance. Thomas said

« Our PCR test is the same gold standard that the province uses, » said Nordstrom. « And that’s why we chose it »

But some other rapid tests have encountered problems identifying asymptomatic patients, so doctors are monitoring its performance.

– There is always a small problem when you start to move these tests to a real environment where the sampling may not be as perfect, you may have sample and transport issues compared to a well-chosen laboratory controls, at ???? Dr Zain Chagla, an infectious disease specialist at McMaster University, told CTV News

He said the speed of the test could prompt some workers to get tested who would be reluctant to report a sniffle – and could potentially waste days of work by self-isolating before an appointment to take a provincial test

– I think people will be like, okay I can take a few hours here to get a result, – Chagla said

If this test works as well as manufacturers’ promises, it could reduce testing backlogs and allow companies to protect their employees while working.
