In the fourth round of the 2020 Draft, the Arizona Coyotes made their first draft pick They picked Mitchell Miller, a USHL Tri-City Storm defenseman The Coyotes made a huge mistake while doing so, and now this error is rightly examined
Miller was rated by many as a second round talent However, his off-ice problems are a bunch of red flags I personally took him completely off my board Despite his high-profile off-ice problems, the Coyotes have still decided to try his luck on him
In a recent article, AZ Central looked at these off-ice issues These issues boil down to what he did to a mentally handicapped black student four years ago Miller did a lot worse than bully the poor child He outright assaulted him I can say that because that’s literally what he was charged with in juvenile court
If you want to know more about its history, you can read this article, but I have to warn you, the details are quite disturbing
The worst part of all of this apparently is that Miller didn’t even really apologize to the child he was victimized by, other than a court-mandated letter (which the family say they never received) It’s downright disturbing and it shows a total absence of remorse or guilt
According to the Coyotes, who admitted they were aware of the incident, it shows a lack of accountability This is something the team has been missing for years Earlier this year, the CEO and President Xavier Gutierrez was selected to be part of an NHL committee that is committed to ending racism But apparently he didn’t care enough about racism not to recruit a racist who assaulted a black person
There is only one choice for the Coyotes They must part ways with Miller It was a mistake to recruit him, especially since the Coyotes admitted they were aware of his accusation of assault Yes, that was four years ago But so far Miller has not shown too much remorse
I’m all for giving people a second chance if they prove they are truly sorry and are ready to be forgiven Unless I’m missing something Miller shows no sign of repenting for what ‘he did Hockey has deep and undeniable roots in racism and it’s time for the NHL to step in and start ripping them out, painful as that may be
