When Britney Spears suffered a tragic breakdown in 2007, she endured it in the most public way possible. When the former Disney star’s life fell apart within 14 months, every heartbreaking step was recorded – something that would not happen now thanks to a massive shift in attitudes about mental health issues. And one of the deeply tragic images from that period was that of Britney putting a clipper on her head.
According to the 2019 documentary, Britney Spears – Breaking Point, the horrific scenes came after she showed up unannounced at ex-husband Kevin Federline’s and asked about her sons Sean and Jayden. Her request was reportedly denied, and the angry and frustrated star apparently drove to a random hair salon and asked hairdresser Esther Tognozz to shave her head in front of more than 70 members of the paparazzi.
Tognozz tried to talk her out of it, but when she turned around Britney grabbed the clipper and sheared the locks herself. In the meantime, her bodyguards did nothing.

« She had two bodyguards who were supposed to keep an eye on them to make sure the paparazzi didn’t get any pictures, » Tognozz recalled in the Channel 5 documentary when the footage showed helpers laughing with photographers.
The saddest part, however, was Britney’s expression as her smile turned into panic and sadness when she realized what she had done. Dejected, she was annoyed that her « mother was going to be ripped off » before moving to the Body and Soul Tattoo Studio.
There tattoo artist Emily Wynne-Hughes remembered hearing « an insane roar outside » when Britney and the dads started up.
« I wasn’t sure what was going on if there was a riot outside and then the lightning came. The door opened slowly and a hooded figure walked through the door, » she said.
And it was Wynne-Hughes who shared with Britney her reasons for shaving her head – details she disclosed for the first time in 12 years in the documentary.
« I noticed that her hair was gone. I remember asking here, ‘Why are you shaving your head?’ And her answer was a little strange, « says the tattoo artist.
« It was, you know, ‘I just don’t want anyone to touch my head. I don’t want anyone to touch my hair. I’m sick of people touching my hair.' »
In fact, Britney’s image had apparently been controlled by musicians since she first came on stage with … Baby One More Time in 1998. They reportedly micro-managed every detail of their appearance right down to their underwear. But when she sat there and untangled, Wynne-Hughes said this time Britney’s team had no interest in intervening.
« It just didn’t seem like they really cared about it. I felt this crazy sense of fear and energy that felt so negative, » she said.
Britney’s tragic story is repeated in a new New York Times documentary, Framing Britney Spears, which airs in the UK tonight. It takes a close look at her mental health struggles and the controversial conservatory she has been under since her stint in mental health care in 2008.
