4 min: Moder again, who appears to be playing as an overlapping full-back when he gets caught in a flick by Welbeck. Better shot this time, but Dubravka is up to the task. Brighton is already opening.

2 min: Maupay reaches the touchline and dives into a flank, Welbeck leaves it to Moder, who has the chance to score on his first start. He turns it over. He saw fame and delivered something less than glorious.

Fulham’s loss to Leeds last night means the stakes are not quite as high as they might have looked midweek, but there is certainly so much to play on Saturday night. This will be a battle of styles: play well and not get what they deserve in Brighton’s case as opposed to not playing well and kind of not in the relegation zone in Newcastle’s case. Graham Potter is admired by Brighton fans, Steve Bruce not by Newcastle fans, and yet there is a single point between them. Newcastle, without Callum Wilson, without Miguel AlmÃron and Allan Saint-Maximin, are likely to try to score a draw. Though they probably would have done that anyway. Brighton have a top notch player in Adam Lallana finally free from injury and the aftermath of Covid, and if Albion could only find someone to score for them he can get along. But we should be prepared that this is the kind of game where staring into the abyss lowers entertainment levels to read the manual of a micrometer screw knife. Kick-off is at 8 p.m. UK time.
