Dr. Abraar Karan continues his call for higher quality masks to be made available to the public to better protect them from COVID-19.

Karan, a doctor at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, has signed up for a national high filtration mask program in the US used to distribute medical masks such as N95 to households across the country. The doctor says more efficient masks are an important tool in preventing the spread of COVID-19, especially when a more infectious variant of the virus prevails.

« We’re counting on you – I’m very hopeful that this government can make it « wrote Karan on Twitter. “Bring #BetterMasks to this country. We will profit against # covid19; against other respiratory pathogens such as seasonal flu; against bioterrorism threats. “

The doctor pointed out that European countries are switching to more effective masks and pointed to the increasing number of infections caused by the strain of the B117 virus, which was first detected in the UK and is believed to be able to spread more easily. Germany on Tuesday mandated that people using public transport or other public places must wear medical-style masks such as N95 or surgical masks.

For months, health officials have been emphasizing the importance of wearing masks prevent the spread of COVID-19.

On Tuesday, the researchers shared the results of a survey on the effects of mask-wearing behavior among more than 300,000 Americans and published the study in The Lancet.

John Brownstein, Infectious Disease Epidemiologist and Chief Innovations Officer at Boston Children’s Hospital and one of the study’s authors, wrote that he and his colleagues found that a 10 percent increase in self-reported mask use in a community was associated with more than three times the odds to reduce the transmission rate of viruses.

« Mask mandates alone were not enough to prevent this en of masks to increase, « wrote Brownstein on Twitter. « Wearing social distancing masks gave the highest likelihood of transmission control. »

A mask makes a person a « dead end » for the virus, especially if it is a mask with « excellent protection, » Karan wrote .

Medical masks, especially those that offer higher filtration and better fit, are « undeniably needed, » said the doctor.

« If you have [the virus], the chances are you will transmitted it, much less. If you’re around you are much less likely to get it, « he said. » And as we go forward optimizing our vaccines to accommodate new varieties of the & strains, ours will Backstop measures continue to be masks. We have to make sure that we get the absolute best we can. That is our health. There should be no compromises here! «

1 / That’s big – Germany scream Now bt medical masks for all citizens in public transport & in supermarkets (last week only in the Bavaria region, which only contains stricter FFP2 masks).

3 / « The new European recommendations have followed an increase in the offer At the beginning of the pandemic, when there were concerns that the use of medical masks by the public would mean there would not be enough for health professionals on the front lines. ”

5 / @ Transition46 @JoeBiden @KamalaHarris we’re counting on you – I am very hopeful that this administration will make it.

7 / And as we optimize our vaccines in the future to adapt them to new variants of the & strains, our backstop measures will continue to be masks.

In the hours following his inauguration, Biden took a number of emergency measures to address the COVID-19 pandemic, including using masks and social distancing on federal properties. On Thursday, the president is expected to sign a mask ordinance that will apply to airports, planes, ships, intercity buses, trains and public transport.
