With the writing on the wall, Brandon Smith of Melbourne has received approval to find a new NRL home at the end of the 2021 season.
Smith has spoken long of his desire to join Hooker and has planned his time until Cameron Smith retires.
Since the skipper has not yet officially announced his future game, the younger Smith was skipped by Harry Grant.
Grant was unearthed as an aspiring superstar with a breakout season when he was loaned to Wests Tigers and triumphed in Queensland’s state of origin last month.
Melbourne announced Monday afternoon that Smith could leave a year before the end of his contract after the Kiwi international asked for an early release.
They realized that the 24-year-old, who played as a center forward on the home and off the bench this season, only wanted to play as a hooker.
« Brandon is a wonderful player and a great person at the club, » said Frank Ponissi, Storm general manager.
« Now that he is a Premier Player and National Representative and has been a valuable asset to our team over the past few years, any move will only be considered if appropriate arrangements are made. ». ”
The Storm wants a player of similar worth to Smith if allowed to leave, much like test winger Josh Addo-Carr, who wanted an early exit to return to Sydney.
They couldn’t reach a suitable deal for Addo-Carr and he will see his contract next season.
