A teenage boy in the US stood up to the odds by surviving a terrible forklift accident after his lower body was amputated.
Loren Schauers was driving a forklift over a bridge when he turned, fell 15 m and got stuck on the ground under the 4-ton vehicle.
The 19-year-old remembered being conscious the entire time he looked down, that his right arm had exploded and everything was completely bruised under his hips.
Young Tradie made the brave decision to have medics perform hemicorporectomy – which would amputate anything below his waist – to save his life.
Doctors told his girlfriend Sabia Reiche, now 21, that he would not survive, and she said goodbye to him six times for fear that he would not live another day.
The couple had been together for 18 months when the accident happened, but said the turmoil brought them closer together and they got engaged this year.
« Getting half of my body amputated wasn’t a difficult decision – it was basically a choice to live or die, » said Loren, of Montana.
« Since Sabia promises to stay by my side no matter what and my whole immediate family is around me, it really wasn’t a difficult choice for me! »
At the time of the accident in September 2019, Loren was working as a bridge repair worker.
He was driving a forklift over a highway bridge when cars illegally drove him through the traffic lights.
Suddenly the single lane narrowed and when a car drove past him, Loren turned too close to the edge of the bridge, causing the ground to collapse under him.
The teen then attempted to jump off the falling forklift, but his leg was caught in the seat belt.
« When the edge of the bridge collapsed and the forklift toppled up, I buckled up and jumped out, » said Loren.
« The seat belt wrapped around my leg as I jumped out, so I swung out instead and broke one of my ribs from the forklift’s floorboard. ”
Loren was then « thrown off the forklift » when it landed at the bottom of the hill, leaving him with terrible injuries.
« My eyes were wide open and I saw the forklift come down and land on my hips and right forearm, » he said.
« We later found out that he survived because the ground was as soft as Loren’s team had just moved it, » said Sabia.
An ambulance landed on the bridge and pulled Loren up the hill on a stretcher before flying him to a nearby hospital.
Loren had completely lost his right forearm and hand in the accident and broken his right collarbone and shoulder.
He also suffered a pulmonary embolism – a blockage in his pulmonary artery – and needed a breathing tube.
Loren’s lower body was also crushed in the accident. He consented to the radical hemicorporectomy, which amputated everything below his waist.
« Every medical professional I meet is pretty amazed at everything, especially the story that goes with my injuries, » Loren said.

They tied off its major veins at the bottom and did scans to see what condition it was in there, but found that its pelvis had completely collapsed.
« After seeing the condition of my pelvis, it was believed that I would need hemicorporectomy, » Loren said.
During this time, Sabia was told by doctors that Loren’s chances of survival were slim and the couple had had several farewell interviews.
« The night before his operation, he wrote » I love you « on a piece of paper, as it could have been our last night together. I still have this piece of paper today, ”said Sabia.
« There have been many times the doctors have told us he was likely to die, so we had these really long » I love you « and all these conversations. ”
But Loren braved all odds and soon his health began to improve at an incredible rate.
He stayed in the hospital for three months, where he did four weeks of rehab and then went home.
