A severe thunderstorm warning was issued as a series of severe thunderstorm cells moved across the Sydney metropolitan area, expecting rain with large hailstones, noxious winds and high winds.

The Bureau of Meteorology forecast, released just before 4 p.m. Monday, said the heavy rain could cause flash floods and is likely to hit parts of the Blue Mountains, Hawkesbury and Sydney areas.

The thunderstorms are moving southeast and will hit Parramatta, Campbelltown, Liverpool and Bowral at 4 pm. 8 p.m..

And at 4. 50 p.m., Hornsby, Sutherland, Wollongong, Sydney Airport, Sydney Olympic Park, Sydney Harbor Bridge and Cessnock.

The state rescue service advised people to move their cars under cover and away from trees, remove loose objects from their properties, and stay away from fallen power lines.

It also warned people not to walk or ride a bike through floods, and keep children and pets indoors.

A more general severe thunderstorm warning currently applies to Hunter, Metropolitan, Illawarra, South Coast, Central Plateaus, Southern Plateaus, Central Western Slopes and Plains, and parts of the mid-north coast, northwestern slopes and plains, southwestern slopes, Lower Western, Upper Western and Snowy Mountains districts.

Thunderstorms in much of New South Wales over the weekend resulted in dozens of calls for help between Saturday, Nov.. 00 a.m. and Sunday, 6. 00 o’clock, said the state rescue service.
